"Diversify and consolidate the revenues of my dairy workshop!"
"I'm looking for calves that are born easily and from short gestations. They need to get off to a fast start thanks to excellent drinking skills and good vitality to sell them quickly and well."
Sires that make crossbred calf rearing as easy as possible, with easy calvings, short pregnancies and calves that get off to a fast start.
Philippe PUECHBERTY, Prim Holstein breeder at GAEC DE PUECHBERTY in SAINT-ANDRE-DE-NAJAC, Aveyron: a veritable reservoir of milk and genetic nuggets, and a long-time user of crossbreeding!
The GAEC’s main activity is dairy production, with a milk reference of 700,000 liters delivered to the SODIAAL cooperative.
Each year, the farm has 80 pure-bred calvings, with the 20 best heifers kept for renewal. Around 20 heifers of high genetic quality will be sold for breeding.
The GAEC regularly sends cows and heifers to the AURIVA Biotechnologies Station in Denguin for embryo sampling to feed the selection program and develop its commercial activity. Even if the breeding priority is unequivocally to ensure renewal, Philippe has always used crossbreeding since the GAEC was created in 1990.
“Today, 10% of inseminations carried out on the farm are with crossbred bulls. Cross-breeding is an additional source of income, which means that we are not solely dependent on the price of milk. I sell a 3- to 4-week-old crossbred calf to the UNICOR cooperative for €50 to €150 more than a dairy calf. This may vary depending on the Conformations and the period.
Depending on the dairy situation, the heifer market and the calf market, I may or may not increase my share of cross-breeding insemination,” explains Philippe.
For their crossbreeding inseminations, the partners most often use doses of INRA 95 Blonds and YPERIOS test bulls, and thus contribute to their indexing and improvement. “I’ve never had the slightest problem with birth facilities, which are an absolute priority for me, even though the bulls being tested are not the ones with the best guarantees,” assures Philippe.
Crossbreeding is carried out on the least genetically interesting cows and non-pregnant cows after the 3rd AI. “Compared with the Prim’Holstein breed, we have noted a better fertility of crossbred doses. Crossbred calves have the same mortality levels, i.e. very low, and require the same rearing and care time. The differences lie in coat color: lighter for crossbreds, and selling prices!says Philippe.
