Maternal abilities progeny testing station in Casteljaloux: the program’s reliability trump card

Located in the Lot et Garonne region, the maternal abilities progeny testing station enables us to specify and confirm the quality of bulls distributed by AURIVA, based on rigorous testing of their progeny under similar breeding conditions.

The Casteljaloux facility is the only one of its kind in the world, enabling us to offer the highest level of indexing reliability. Each year, 150 daughters of 8 bulls are tested before being offered (or not) in the AURIVA catalog.

By bringing all the animals together on the same site and eliminating the environmental effects of breeding farms, several hundred measurements are taken each year to compile maternal quality indexes:

  • Growth: monthly weighing, scoring, detailed measurements at 18 months
  • Precocity: heat detection twice a day, insemination at 15 months with semen from test bulls
  • Calving at 2 years with recording: calving preparation, calving conditions, birth weight, pelvimetry
  • Impact of the mother on the calf: milk recording at 60 and 120 days with double weighing of calves before and after suckling, monthly weighing of calves and scoring at 120 days.
