22 November 2023ORIGAMI: The right fold!
Laurent, Jean and Thérèse GOYHENX - Nabas (64)
Born at EARL LARROUDE on the GOYHENX breeding farm at Nabas (Pyrénées-Atlantiques), ORIGAMI has been added to the catalog after very convincing results for calving and suckling aptitudes. In this article, we take a look at the story behind this bull with promising potential.
ORIGAMI is the first son of LOLITA (CLIMAX/LEO), a cow bred by the AURIVA program to the famous VANDA (LEO/FALLOU) from the LARROUDE breeding program. VANDA also had DAISY (SCOUT/LEO), dam of NAVARRAISE (HORFE/SCOUT), embryo donor for the AURIVA scheme.
LOLITA stands out for her length and style, combined with a school pool. She also has very good indexes with 108 in IVMAT and ISEVR. In order to preserve this formidable line, the breeders decided to call on the AURIVA embryo transplant team to collect its embryos.
- EARL LARROUDE: family business taken over by Laurent GOYHENX in 2022
- 102 hectares of UAA: 60 ha in meadows and the rest in cereals for self-consumption and sale
- OS members since 1985
- 80 Blonde d’Aquitaine dams
- 100% AI
- Traditional South-West herd management on hillside soils
- Production of fat cows, grazers, bullocks (a few animals have been sold directly since 2003).

We didn't immediately perceive his great potential, but here we had a nugget that the technical team, alerted upstream by the genetic level of his ancestry, immediately identified as promising!
La famille GOYHENX
While the recruitment of ORIGAMI to join the selection scheme came as a surprise to the breeders, it was an obvious choice for the technical team.
Today, his results and catalog display speak for themselves: he is indexed for Maternal Qualities, with 110 in PLAIT and 112 in IVEL, and has brilliantly taken the final step in a long selection process spanning several generations of cows. Jean, Thérèse and Laurent GOYHENX also have high hopes for the future of this bull, considering that as passionate breeders committed to the selection scheme, seeing the emergence of a bull with maternal qualities is an event they’ve been waiting for all their careers.
The presence of high-quality animals in their herd is no coincidence, and reflects the meticulous selection work carried out on a daily basis in partnership with their cooperative SOGEN and AURIVA. The two main selection criteria for their herds are fertility and milk. According to Laurent, size is already well established in the herd thanks to ongoing work to balance the DM and DS of the animals. Another key objective is to preserve high-quality ponds to facilitate calving. Today, as evidenced by the measured performances, they feel that the herd’s suckling aptitudes are well established: calves born on the farm achieve PAT 210 days significantly higher than the breed average, with 312 kg for males and 289 kg for females.
In 100% AI and particularly attentive to the docility and breed qualities of the animals, Laurent confides to us that he is very satisfied with AURIVA’s selection choices in these aspects:

A lot of effort has gone into the program in terms of color and homogeneity. We've also seen a great deal of progress recently in animal docility.
Laurent GOYHENX
The particular attention paid to selection by the GOYHENX family is reflected in the high genetic level of their herd and constant progress on maternal criteria (Avel: 102 – Milk: 100.1 – IVMAT: 105.2). ORIGAMI represents a perfect combination of excellent calving and suckling abilities that he will pass on to his progeny, offering promising prospects for all breeders using his genetics and AURIVA genetics.
